Working Together

What to expect

We can tailor the approach to your context – get in touch to discuss what may work for you.

How many sessions do we need?

Typically, my work with clients lasts anywhere from one session (focused on a discrete problem), to six sessions.

How do we meet?

I offer consults online, in person at my office or a location convenient for you. It’s up to you, and depends on your situation.

Session by session: my general approach

Session 1

Establish your goal/s and what you’d like to achieve in our time together. Explore your strengths and challenges, some of the antecedents and contributing factors, and discuss your values as a person. In short, get to know you at this moment in time.

Session 2

Informed by your goal/s, we start to introduce strategies for addressing the challenge/s. We may discuss psychological models that apply to the problem and how internal and external factors influence the current status. This understanding will allow us to brainstorm ways to change the situation or behaviour, including scientifically validated tools and techniques.

Session 3

We create an action plan to implement these tools and techniques and explore ways to integrate them into everyday life. This may include practising them in session, planning for implementation in certain situations, and how to monitor their effectiveness. We may also explore obstacles you may encounter in the real world and discuss how to address these when they do arise (such as difficult thoughts and feelings, other people, or old habits).

Session 4

Based on application in the real world, we monitor how things are going for you and track performance against your goal/s. We also discuss values and how you feel about the change in the context of living a full and meaningful life. Using the principles of psychological flexibility – we remain open to change and make adjustments as needed.

Session 5

Continue to monitor implementation, track overall change, and make adjustments. Discuss sustainability, and how the changes you have/are making can be maintained over time.

Session 6

We evaluate the effectiveness of our time together – celebrate the things that went well, and explore the how and why of challenges along the way. As our time comes to an end, we reinforce the continuation plan that empowers you to continue to grow as a person to build a full and meaningful life.

My Techniques

Specifically, I use techniques from:

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Exploring the relationship between thoughts, emotions and behaviour, and how these can be used to unlock potential, leading to greater learning, enjoyment and performance

Commitment and behavioural therapy

A mindfulness-based approach to managing stress and performance anxiety, and living a life (and scoring goals) aligned with your values

Mind factor certification

Based on the revolutionary work of Karl Morris, working with athletes and performers to practice in more effective ways corresponding to their game on the course / court / field, and develop mind factor skills that can be transferred into real life.
