Moving into aged care
Transitioning from home into an aged care centre is a significant life event that can bring about a range of emotions and challenges for both the elderly individual and their family. Specialist counselling support can be hugely beneficial in working through emotional and relational issues early on, and ultimately improve mental health, wellbeing and social relationships in the long term.
How can we work through this important time together, in an effective, compassionate way?
This is something that each one of us has to face at some point in our lives, whether we ourselves are getting old, our partner, or a beloved parent or family member is aging. We have two choices: We can either wait until change is forced upon us, and react to it when we have to, or -
We can plan for it, in a supportive, healthy way, being honest with each other and listening to the perspectives of each other before coming to a decision.
Below I explore some of the common challenges faced during this process, and how having a counsellor specialised in managing change can assist you, and your loved ones, navigate this next life stage.

How Sarah can help
With academic qualifications in relationship counselling, grief and loss, conflict resolution and the process of working through change, I understand the emotional and psychological toll that relocation can have on both the elderly person and the family. Alongside my personal experience volunteering in the aged care sector, and caring for my own grandma, these are my reasons for working with families who are facing similar issues, and supporting them through this difficult time.
Planning for change early, and managing the potential issues that may arise, can prevent them from becoming significant challenges down the track. Often the very best therapy is having someone objective to talk to, providing a safe and confidential space to explore options and meaningful opportunities. A counsellor can help work through difficult emotions, understand different perspectives, and develop plans, making the process easier to navigate for all involved.
I provide sessions with individuals or families to understand your situation, talk through some of your challenges, explore your strengths, and discuss a way forward. I also spend time with people who have recently moved into aged care, about things they care about, their life experiences, and how to find meaning in their new environment. Feel free to get in touch for a confidential 15 minute conversation if you'd like to discuss how my services may support you.
