Darwin Golf Course
A review of Darwin Golf Course in Marrara, Northern Territory of Australia
How we got there…
We were in the Northern Territory on a work trip, and decided to stay an extra day to play a round of golf in Darwin. As there was a veterans comp on in the afternoon, we were lucky enough to squeeze nine holes in on a Monday morning - before the heat got too much!
The course track has been around for nearly 100 years, and in 1967 was redesigned by Thomason and Wolveridge. It's a park layout, which apparently lost a grove of African Mahogany trees in tropical cyclone Marcus in 2018.
The weather was a chilly 28 degrees in Darwin, and yet felt much hotter on the day! We had a really warm welcome from the proshop, and a delicious meal at Mulligans restaurant afterward - best veggie burger we've ever had.
Hazards and Highlights
One surprise: African Mahoganies planted after cyclone Tracy in 1974, not very resilient to cyclones, and the shortest par three we've ever played (temporary hole 14)
One birdie: orange footed megapode (scrubfowl)
Biggest challenge - the heat
Suggestions and Strategy
Something the course taught you: pack lots of water!
Favourite hole: hole 18 coming into the clubhouse
Some advice: ask questions before you head out
